Dallas Buyers Club: A masterpiece.
THIS ARTICLE DOES NOT CONTAIN SPOILERS.
I open Netflix (don't come at me pls). I click on this random film called Dallas Buyers Club just because Matthew McConaughey is on the poster. Thirty minutes into the film, my phone rings 36 times, but I ignore it because I am too hooked enjoying this masterpiece that I have stumbled upon. That's how good Dallas Buyers Club is.
General information:
Dallas Buyers Club is an American biographical drama film by Jean-Marc Vallée. The screenplay for the film was written by Craig Borten and Melisa Wallack.
Dallas Buyers Club stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto (yes THE Jared Leto).
Upon its release on September 7, 2017, the film grossed over $52 million, with a budget of $5 million!
Awards:
Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role: Matthew McConaughey.
Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Jared Leto.
Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling: Adruitha Lee & Robin Matthews.
The budget for the makeup was $250 and it won an Oscar.
Story:
Upon finding out he has AIDS, Ron Woodrof begins smuggling pharmaceutical drugs from Mexico into Dallas, Texas to use it and sell it to other people with AIDS through a club labeled Dallas Buyers Club.
Because the story evolves in the 1980's, researches for AIDS were still in the first stages. Additionally, Ron faces problems with the FDA, and starts to fight them alongside his partner Rayon who has also been diagnosed with AIDS.
The film is based upon a true story. The screenplay was written back in 1992 and was reviewed again in 2000. However, many actors and producers were rejected from being part of the film. That's when Matthew barged in and brought this masterpiece to life.
What do I think about it?
Dallas Buyers Club is Matthew McConaughey's best performance. (Yes, even better than Interstellar).
Matthew made this film because he wanted to not just to pay the bills. During his interview with Gary Vee, McConaughey has mentioned that he has been offered over $14 million to star in a rom-com, but he refused because he believed he was done with romantic comedies and wanted to start doing drama. And that's why Dallas Buyers Club turned up to be absolutely marvelous.
Matthew McConaughey didn't receive enough credit for his performance in this film. "BuT zIyAd He WoN aN oScAr", WELL THAT'S NOT ENOUGH. Many people refer to him as "the guy from True Detective", he should be referred to as "the guy who turned down $14 million to star in DBS"
And let's not even talk about Jared Leto's performance. (He's an amazing Joker btw). Jared Leto portraits the perfect trans character. His character's relashionship with Ron was firstly based on fighting, homophobia and whatnot. However, because of Leto's amazing acting skills, we -the audience- felt a very smooth transition in Rayon and Ron's relationship that soon enough turned into a never ending supportive friendship.
Dallas Buyers Club has a 2.35:1 aspect ratio which makes it so aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
Let's not forget that Matthew McConaughey lost a total of 21 kgs to play Ron Woodrof, which shows his dedication to the film.
